An Arizona library opens this week as the first public library in the nation to organize their entire collection without the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Librarians instead organized the collection by subject, similar to the layout at large bookstores.

The Arizona Republic offers more about the decision to try a library without Dewey . My favorite quote comes from librarian Marshall Shore: “People think of books by subject. Very few people say, ‘Oh, I know Dewey by heart.” No joke. I’m a librarian and I don’t even pretend to know Dewey by heart. With the Library of Congress Classification system, I have a fighting chance of guessing the correct floor of Coe Library, but after that I’m in trouble.

What do you think about this decision? It sounds kind of appealing, but I usually end up asking for help in bookstores to find what I need. And how will the online library catalog work? Would this be scaleable to large collections?

Renowned author and biologist Rachel Carson would have been 100 years old this week.

If you have never read her work, especially Silent Spring, now is a perfect time to start. She is one of the rare authors whose passion for a narrow field of science not only comes across clearly to the layman but also changed the world.

You can visit the Rachel Carson Online Book Club for an engaging discussion of her books. If you would like to learn more about her life and work, the Fish and Wildlife Service offers a full biographical profile of Carson as well as a calendar of events honoring her 100 birthday.

In honor of Carson’s legacy the EPA is sponsoring a photo, essay and poetry contest “that best expresses the Sense of Wonder that you feel for the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is beautiful to your eyes.”

Contest rules state that “entries must be joint project involving a person under age 18 and a person age 50 or older. Submissions must be received by Friday, June 15, 2007.” Visit the official site for more contest details.

Readers of this blog know that I am always looking for easier ways to create Works Cited pages and bibliographies. BibMe is the latest web-based citation builder that I’ve tested.
Some cool features of BibMe:

- creates citations for books, magazines, journals, websites, films, and newspapers

- creates citations in MLA, APA, and Chicago styles

- offers keyword search for sources

- autofills the information from your source (i.e. less typing for you)

- saves and downloads your bibliography to Microsoft Word

Try it and let me know what you think!

What did you do over the long weekend? I had a blast watching a whole mess of amazing bands in Washington State.

Tell us all about your weekend in the comments, give links to your Flickr pictures!

Before you get back to studying and working, how about some footage of Bjork performing with her Icelandic Brass Band on Saturday, filmed by your happy but tired library blogger:YouTube Preview Image

Students and researchers know that improving the built-in search capability of your browser saves time and screen space.

Some ideas for maximizing your search potential:

1) Install simple plug-ins to add more searches to the built-in search on the upper right corner of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.

2) Add some library specific Firefox plug-ins from the Travelin Librarian, including my favorite, a Prospector search. bprospector.gif

3) For those of you interested in taking your research power even further, I invite you to beta test the UW Libraries toolbar.

Our toolbar offers access to tons of library searches, a host of UW logins, and fun internet stuff as well. Let us know what you think, as we are still tweaking the design. Leave comments here or visit our toolbar survey and we’ll take note!
