geyser.jpg

Now we can enjoy the wonder and beauty of Old Faithful from the comfort of our desks.

According to the Yellowstone Park officials:

This exciting new feature provides live, full motion video of Old Faithful Geyser, as well as Beehive, Lion, Giantess, and other geysers located on Geyser Hill. Viewers may also observe wildlife as they wander into range of the webcam.

This real time webcam can be launched at http://www.nps.gov/yell/photosmultimedia/yellowstonelive.htm
where a 5-minute audio message presented by a park ranger plays with the live video stream, providing information about various hydrothermal features. For those who want to know more about Yellowstone’s thermal features or wildlife, there are links on the webcam page that take viewers to a variety of information, including short ranger talk videos.

The webcam is still considered experimental, especially in the harsh environment of a typical Yellowstone winter. On occasions when the webcam may be out of order, please do not contact the park as staff will be closely monitoring the equipment and will work to correct any problems as quickly as conditions allow.

Look for information about additional programs offered in 2008 via this live streaming webcam.

The webcam, a Canon NU-700N, was donated along with supporting funds, by Canon U.S.A. to the non-profit Yellowstone Park Foundation.

The UW Libraries recently added AP Images to our suite of searchable databases. This is one of my favorite library tools, as you can search by keyword and find beautiful photographs of news makers, fashion, sports, historical images, and entertainment.

I searched for Wyoming and found some great photos:

“Wyoming students and fans tear down the goal post at War Memorial Stadium after Wyoming beat BYU 31-17 in Laramie, Wyo., Saturday night, Nov. 13, 1999.” (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

“A sign marking the entrance into the state of Wyoming along Interstate 25 near the Colorado border, is shown Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001. Some Wyoming vistas still look like the surface of the moon, but at least people will stop joking on a cosmic scale about the state’s tourism slogan. After eight years, the slogan “Wyoming: like no place on Earth” has been officially retired now that all the highway signs welcoming visitors have been replaced.” (AP Photo/Wyoming Department of Transportation)

ap6901010824.jpg“This wood engraving shows women at the Cheyenne polls casting their ballots in a local election in Wyoming in 1869. Though the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, did not pass until 1920, the territory of Wyoming granted women equal voting rights on Dec. 10, 1869.” (AP Photo)

To access AP Images, select “A” in the title list on our article databases page.

buzzwords.jpg

The New York Times reports on last year’s best buzzwords. My favorites: lolcats and nose bidets.
