There are a million ways to analyze the 2008 presidential campaign, but lately I’ve enjoyed an online conversation about the candidates’ font choices instead of their politics.*

Gary Hustwit, who directed a documentary film about fonts (!), applauds Barack Obama’s use of Gotham for his campaign.

Meanwhile blogging typographers deride Hillary Clinton’s choice as being too academic, and John McCain’s font for being “down-market luxe”. Their vision below:

Which do you like? I think that if I were campaigning, I’d choose futura for my logo.

*This post stems from my interest in typefaces and in no way reflects any endorsement of a particular candidate. I do strongly encourage both voting and learning about type, though!

I love the concept for the new book Not Quite What I Was Planning, which is a collection of six word biographies.

The New Yorker alerted me to the book along with some excellent entries: from a plumber, “fix a toilet, get paid crap”, from Mario Batali, “brought it to a boil, often” and from another contributor, “birth, childhood, adolescence, adolescence, adolescence, adolescence…”

Ever since hearing about it, I’ve tried to think up a good six word autobiography but face a mental block. So I’ll challenge the blog readers… what’s your six word life summary?

It seems like I keep hearing about people and institutions overdoing it with technolust these days.

The Washington Post recently profiled a school that seems to have it all, technologically-speaking. But it turns out the students and faculty do not all love the technology, and many find it to be a distraction. I personally love all the stuff that plugs in and the opportunities it provides, but I heard similar misgivings about the new Classroom Building technology before it opened. Anyone have good or bad experiences to report on the status of technology in the remodeled Classroom Building? And any suggestions on what technology you want to see in the new library addition?

A personal admission of my technolust: 16 GB iphone.
