You know how sometimes you return from a vacation to find that things look different, but you can not figure out why? That happened to me this week. Had Coe Library shaved its mustache while I was away? Lost some weight? Oh! I see! The floors have different numbers now.

Yeah, it is confusing at first. We know. But change keeps the mind sharp. And the University made us do it.

From our building gurus, an explanation. And a map of the current Coe configuration:

Effective Summer 2008, please note that all floors in Coe Library will begin following a new numbering system, changing from the current Basement / First Floor / Second Floor / Third Floor designations to Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3 / Level 4 designations. Simply put, there will no longer be a Basement designation in Coe Library, as that floor will be referred to as Level 1. The main floor at ground level will become Level 2, and what we have previously referred to as the “2nd Floor / 3rd Floor / 4th Floor / 5th Floor”, will be referred to as Level 3 / Level 4 / Level 5 / Level 6. The new nomenclature for the entire Coe Library building is mandated by UW Facilities, for accuracy of directions during an emergency.

Update!  A lovely cross sectional view of our new numbering scheme:
