The Crane!
Coe Library is not so quiet lately! The noises you hear are the not-so-sweet result of an excellent project: the Coe Library ILLC addition, scheduled to open in late 2009.

Jackhammers are conducting demolition work throughout Coe Library, near the front of the 1950’s building and along the east wall of the 1970’s building. The demolition work will be creating significant noise throughout the building over the next two weeks.

We apologize in advance for the noise. If you would like a quiet place to study, the Library Annex and the Brinkerhoff Geology Library are both available and darned near silent. You can also access many library materials remotely, including full-text articles, online encyclopedias and other reference sources, electronic books, electronic audiobooks, and even print articles via our Request It service.

Thank you for your understanding!

“Are those sticky droplets falling from the trees, landing on me and my bike and my car, really sap?”

This reference question made me feel just a little bit gross inside once I found out the answer. The substance dripping from cottonwoods around campus did indeed begin as sap, but went through the digestive tract of an aphid before it landed on you, your bike, and your car. Aphid specialists call it “honeydew“. To which I say “honey ewwwwww”.

Aphids visited by black garden ants (Lasius niger) and brimming over with honeydew.

You know Salman Rushdie is coming to campus, right? And you are beyond excited. And you want to read his works so that you can have amazingly intelligent conversations with him. And you will explain how Midnight’s Children is probably the best book of our time, in the top 10, really.

If that describes you, or if you are curious what the fuss is about, stop by Coe Library with a quickness to get your FREE copy of Midnight’s Children (amazing!), the Satanic Verses (controversial!), or Shalimar the Clown (nominated for the Booker Prize!). Free books and an audience with Sir Salman Rushdie, Best of the Booker and all around excellent author, what could be better?

Anyone else tempted to ask about Padma?
